Origin and world of the character (Lore)
The youngest son of Denethor II and Boromir's younger brother, Faramir is the chief captain of the Guardians of Ithilien, waging a war of attrition and discretion against the forces of Mordor. Often belittled by his father, who openly prefers his elder brother to him, Faramir nonetheless shines for his nobility of spirit, his wisdom and his uprightness. Unlike his brother, he proves his strength of character and purity of soul when he crosses paths with Frodo and Sam: faced with the temptation of the One Ring, he refuses to take it, choosing to release the Hobbits so that they can complete their sacred quest. His desperate devotion to the defence of Osgiliath makes him one of the most touching and heroic characters in the War of the Ring.
