In theOne Piece universe, Gear 5 represents the ultimate stage in the awakening of Monkey D. Luffy’s physical abilities. This transformation first manifests during the final battle on the roof of Onigashima against Emperor Kaido, during the Land of Wa arc. This awakening reveals the true nature of his Devil Fruit, which is not the Paramecia-typeGomu Gomu no Mi, but a mythological Zoan-type fruit named theHito Hito no Mi, Model Nika, associated with the Sun God.
