Character background and universe (Lore)

Edward Newgate, nicknamed Whitebeard, is one of the greatest legends in the One Piece universe. Captain of the Whitebeard Pirates and a former member of the Four Emperors, he has long been regarded as one of the most powerful men in the world.

Newgate stands out as much for his strength as for his very particular take on piracy. Whilst many seek above all wealth or domination, he regards his crew as a true family and calls his men his ‘sons’.

His power stems in particular from the Gura Gura no Mi, a Devil Fruit capable of generating powerful vibrations and shockwaves destructive enough to disrupt an entire battlefield. His physical strength and mastery of combat also make him a formidable opponent even without using his power.

Whitebeard plays a major role during the Battle of Marineford, where he rallies his crew and allies in an attempt to save Portgas D. Ace. This confrontation goes a long way towards cementing his legendary status within the series.
